Where The Technical Poling Skiff Actually Came From
Harry was guiding the Keys when the technical poling skiff was invented. Here is the short history, told by someone standing in it, including credit to the boats that got there first.

The technical poling skiff did not get invented on a drawing board. It got argued into existence over about twenty years by a small number of guides and builders in South Florida who were all losing the same fight with the same water at the same time.
Harry Spear was there for most of it. He came to the Florida Keys in the early 1970s, guided for close to four decades, and built his first skiff in 1978 because what he could buy did not do what he needed. He is one of the few people left who can describe the sequence from inside it.
He is also, notably, generous about who got there first.
Before there was a category
When Harry started guiding, there was no such thing as a technical poling skiff. There were boats, and you used one.

That is the whole problem statement. Guides were poling boats that had not been designed to be poled, in water they had not been designed for, and then adapting their fishing around what the boat could not do.
The Keys of that era are worth picturing. Harry has said there were only about thirty skiffs working the whole fishery, and that the old-timers who had been there twenty years before him were already convinced it was ruined. He describes flats and islands nobody had ever fished, close enough to look at and wonder about.
You could find your own water. What you could not do was buy the right boat to get onto it.
The first one that worked
Ask Harry to name the boat that changed it and he does not name his own. He names the Dolphin Super Skiff: the first really good poling boat, and a quiet one.
Two things in that, and the second is the one people miss. Quiet. Not fast, not shallow. Quiet.
A hull that slaps makes a noise underwater that a fish forty feet away hears before it ever sees you. Once you have watched enough shots blow up for no visible reason, silence stops being a comfort feature and becomes the whole ballgame. The category organized itself around this early.
Then the Whipray
The next step is the one most people have heard of, and again Harry credits it plainly:
“When Chris Morejohn and Hal Chittum designed the Whipray and started Hell's Bay, that was a pretty decent boat. Rode hard, pretty wet, but it poled in shallow water, and his beautiful finish work, and it was quiet. So that was kind of the beginning of a company who really went after poling.”

Read that again, because it is unusually fair for a competitor. He gives them the innovation, the craftsmanship, and the founding of the category as a business. Then he tells you the tradeoff: it rode hard and it rode wet.
That is what a builder's assessment sounds like. The boat solved the problem it set out to solve and it cost something else to do it. Every boat since has been arguing about that exchange rate.
What everyone was actually chasing
Strip out the brands and the argument comes down to four things that fight each other:
- Draft. How little water it floats in. Everything else gets traded against this.
- Silence. No hull slap. Buys you shots you would not otherwise get.
- Ride. Whether it beats you up and soaks you getting there and getting home.
- Poling effort. How the boat feels after six hours on the platform. Discussed least, matters most to the people doing it for a living.
You cannot maximize all four. Wide and flat floats shallow and rides terrible. Sharp entry rides beautifully and will not float where you need it. Heavy is quiet and stable and murders you on the pole. Every skiff on the market is one specific answer to that four-way argument, and most buyer disappointment comes from buying a boat that answered a different question than the one the buyer was asking.
Where weight came in
Harry's answer leans hard on one variable: take the weight out.

That is the clearest statement of the case anyone has made. Three hundred pounds is a passenger you did not invite. It costs you draft, it costs you poling effort, it costs you horsepower, and it costs you every one of those things simultaneously, all day, forever.
His route to it is foam core and disciplined layup rather than exotic material. Sixteen sheets of foam weigh about what a sheet and a half of three-quarter-inch plywood does, so you start light and then do not need many layers of glass to make it stiff.
And what he claims it buys on the water:
“You just wouldn't believe how easy they are to pole. You can shove either of those two boats, balanced out with weight in the front and weight in the back, in a ten mile an hour wind, and just pole along easily and glide thirty or forty feet without having to pole.”

He compares the feel to a sports car: no dead moment where you are fighting inertia before the boat agrees to move. Put the pole down, push, and it goes.
Why the history is worth knowing
Not for trivia. Because it tells you what to ask.
Every skiff you can buy today is a descendant of that twenty-year argument, and each one inherits a position on it. When a builder cannot tell you what his hull gives up, one of two things is true: he does not know, or he is not going to say.
The builders who were in the argument tend to answer immediately, at length, and with real credit to the people who beat them to something. That is what expertise sounds like in this business.
